Oxygen
is the most important nutrient of all, and the only way we can get it
is to absorb it throughthe delicate linings of the lungs. The lungs pick
up oxygen from the air we breath and expel carbon dioxide from the blood
stream. Without adequate supplies of oxygen to the tissues, health simply
cannot be maintained. In our highly industrialized society, our lungs
are exposed to much higher levels of pollutants than before. The most
dangerous are: heavy metals, oxides of nitrogen and sulfur
and carbon tetrachloride. Moreover, many forms of electromagnetic
radiation, smoking and harmful microorganisms influence
pathological conditions of the respiratory system.
